Foreign Auto-industry Firms Continue to Flock to Kanagawa Prefecture: TMD, Karmann and Sabo
Kanagawa prefecture, home to a number of R&D facilities for major automakers and a concentration of supporting industries, is seeing an influx of foreign-affiliated auto parts makers and auto-related service providers. Since January 2003, ten such firms* have set-up operations in the region, the same number opting for Aichi prefecture, Japan's auto industry capital. Notably, six of these ten firms are Germany-based, which may be explained by Kanagawa prefecture being home to the German Centre for Industry and Trade (GCIT), an international German school and a thriving German community. Three of these recent entrants are outlined below: TMD Friction and Wilhelm Karmann, both of Germany, and Brazil-based Sabo.
*JETRO supported a total of 29 foreign-affiliated auto industry firms (including these ten selecting Kanagawa) in setting up a presence in Japan as a whole between January 2003 and October 2007.
TMD Friction
TMD Friction, Europe's largest (and the world's second largest) manufacturer of high performance automobile disc brake pads and drum brake linings, established a subsidiary in Yokohama in October 2004. The firm sought to strengthen ties with Japanese automakers, in particular at the early stages of product development and testing, when technical decisions about brake pads and linings are made. Having a base in Japan greatly facilitates TMD's ability to take part in such early phases, which typically involve many meetings between manufacturer and part supplier. TMD's Japanese clients use the firm's brake pads and linings (which are built to European specifications) for models built in Japan for export to Europe or those assembled in Europe for sale in local markets. TMD is also aiming to become a supplier of its leading components for domestic Japan car models, with plans to open an R&D facility in Yokohama towards this aim by the end of 2009.Wilhelm Karmann
Karmann is a leading developer and manufacturer of automobiles and convertible roof systems, holding a 20% share of the world market for convertible roof systems. The firm opened a Japan representative office in November 2006, at the encouragement of one of its principal Japan partners, a major automaker. Karmann upgraded this office to a full subsidiary in July 2007. Although the Japan market for convertibles is currently small, changing demographics and lifestyles are expected to boost demand. By setting up a manufacturing facility in Japan, Karmann is better able to work closely with automakers in all phases of development, from R&D to product completion. This is vital for such manufacturer-supplier partnerships, which require close technical collaboration.Sabo
Sabo is Brazil's leading manufacturer of sealing and fluid conveyance products, mainly oil seals, water pump seals, gaskets and hoses, for the automotive market, supplying to the major OEMs worldwide and exporting to over 70 countries. Sabo already does business with Japanese automakers out of its operations in Brazil and Germany. Aiming to improve technical and commercial support for its Japan customers and expand sales in the country, Sabo opened a Japan branch office in June 2007, after taking part in a JETRO-organized invitational tour program focusing on the auto components industry. Sabo intends to supply high quality, self-certified components for the Japan market that are made in Brazil, Germany or China and tailored to the needs of Japanese automakers. The firm sees Japan as a key center in its global strategy, and aims to further its share of the global market by setting up a factory and increasing investments in Japan or entering into a capital partnership with a Japanese manufacturer that has a matching business strategy.

Metris, a Belgium-based Metrology Solutions Provider, Begins Full-Scale Operations in Nagoya
On November 26th, Metris
, a Belgium-based provider of 3D laser measuring machines for the automotive and aerospace industries, announced the launch of its full-scale Japan operations, having established Metris Japan K.K., (wholly owned by Metris' British subsidiary) in Nagoya this past February. The office has a showroom featuring its range of products.
Metris, which provides solutions for many of Europe's leading automotive manufacturers, decided that a Japanese operation was needed to bring the firm closer to its Japan customers, to learn their needs and develop products accordingly. Bert Adams, Metris Japan's president, said, "We chose Nagoya for our Japan office because our major customers are located in the area. We'll be enhancing our customer technical support, and realize the importance of having Japanese staff deal with our Japan customers and distributor network. Therefore, we will be adding Japanese staff in the coming year."
Adams added, "In the past, the automotive industry primarily needed contact measuring machines, but now the demand is shifting to non-contact solutions. Metris is a leader in non-contact measuring machines. In Japan, the automotive industry accounts for 60% of our sales, and the aerospace industry for 40%. The goal in opening our Nagoya office is to lift the portion of our world revenue from Japan to 20% (from 5% now)."
Metris utilized JETRO's Invest Japan Business Support Center in Nagoya to set-up its Japan office, taking advantage of free temporary office space, expert consultation and other services. The firm first began making use of JETRO's support and services in 2006.

established a solutions center in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, as a base for the provision of services in the field of process automation.
The Chiba solutions center will function as a base for the company's service system, calibration stand*, and offer remote maintenance and parts and stock services. The company ultimately aims to staff the center with around 50 engineers and other employees. Targeting the industrial complexes stretching between Tokyo and Chiba, Japan's largest market for process automation, the company decided to establish its first domestic solutions center in Chiba because the location also simplified the provision of support from the Tokyo head office. The company intends to establish bases in other industrial areas as required, seeking to expand its share of the Japanese market.
