Social Security Agreement with Canada Enters into Force in March
Regular employees dispatched from Canada are exempted from obligation to enroll in Japan's pension and medical insurance system, due to the implementation of the Social Security Agreement between Japan and Canada. The agreement, which took effect March 1, 2008, prevents a dual insurance liability for pension purposes to ensure that a person is not liable to pay social security contributions to two countries' schemes at the same time.
Japan now has such agreements in place with Canada, France, Belgium, the United States, South Korea, the United Kingdom and Germany; and signed a pact with Australia (this February) and is in negotiations with the Netherlands and Czech Republic.
