Strength of the region's industries and economy
Kagoshima Prefecture ranks the traditional "Kokubu-Hayato Technopolis Area", which is an area of 132 thousand hectares in total including Kagoshima City and Kirishima City (the former Kokubu City and Hayato Town), as "a concentrated area of high technology industries" based on the law for promoting to create new business. Many cutting-edge enterprises of mainly the new materials-related industry and food industry, including Sony and Kyocera, have concentrated on the area since its designation as a technopolis area in 1984.For further business concentration, industrial complexes with good locational terms are developed in the area and various preferential systems are prepared.Moreover, technical support by public research facilities and cooperation among industries, academia and the government are promoted.
Strength of the region's education/research institutes
<Kokubu-Uenohara Techno Park>
The complex is situated next to the Uenohara Jomon No Mori, where the site of the oldest and largest settlement in Japan is preserved and used. It is almost in the center of Kirishima City, where many industries are concentrated. It can be said that cutting-edge technologies exist alongside ancient times in the complex.
<No.1 lot of the Kagoshima Coastal Industrial Zone>
The complex is located in southern Kagoshima City, which has a population of 600 thousand. A neighboring facility of ports and harbors has complete CIQ and a berth for 30 thousand ton marine vessels. The complex is complete with plentiful functions of the southern entrance of Kagoshima Prefecture.
<Kagoshima airport-site complex>
It is located in the Kirishima City (Mizobe Town and Hayato Town) where many industries are concentrated. The complex is at a junction between the land (an interchange on the Kyushu Jukan Expressway) and the air (the Kagoshima Airport), and is a base for industries and distribution with good transportation access.
Industry-government-academia collaboration
Kagoshima Prefecture develops organizations which can organically fulfill a function of research and development, train/secure human resources with sophisticated knowledge and skills, exchange among industries and coordinate between advanced enterprises from other prefectures and local enterprises.
- Kagoshima Prefectural Institute of Industrial Technology: This is a core facility which supports development of technology and technical capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises, and makes efforts for upgrading, advancing and combining industrial technologies of various fields, such as cutting-edge technologies of new materials and electronics.
- Kagoshima Industry Support Center: The center provides comprehensive services for settling problems of finance, operation and technique, and promotes and supports partnerships among industries, academia, and the government and technology transfers as the base of support to small and medium-sized enterprises in Kagoshima Prefecture.
- Research and Development Center of the Kagoshima University, Regional Cooperative Technocenter of the Kagoshima National College of Technology: They conduct joint research with private-sector institutions, funded research, and high technology education/training for technical experts as research and development centers jointly managed by industries and academia.
- Kagoshima Technology Licensing Organization Co., Ltd.: It accelerates industrial development and activation of research in universities by promoting transfer and utilization of intellectual properties of universities with unlimited potential as a bridge between enterprises (needs) and universities (seeds).

Available incentives
Kagoshima Prefecture promotes business invitation by establishing prefectural systems including subsidies of maximum ¥1 billion and low-interest loans for land. The applicable period of subsidies for plant extensions for existing enterprises is unlimited so as to respond to long-term operation plans of invited enterprises.
Implementation of uniform one-stop services for various procedures, securing of human resources and other needs accompanying business advances to the region, as well as follow-up support following initial expansion.
