1) JETRO Participates In Brunei International Trade Exhibition

JETRO recently co-ordinated the participation of several Japanese
companies in the Brunei International Trade Exhibition (BITE)
2004 from February 28 to March 3, which attracted more than
30,000 visitors.

The Japan Pavilion provided an opportunity for the people and
the business community in Brunei Darussalam to see and experience
Japanese robotic technology, as well as Japanese traditional
arts and crafts, and food.

JETRO also demonstrated its international business-matching
website, the Trade Tie-up Promotion Programme (TTPP), which
can help companies in Brunei tap into the huge database to
explore business partnership with Japanese firms. Visitors to
the Pavilion also had the opportunity to find out more about
exhibitions in Japan, and how they might invest and do business
in the country.

The Japan Pavilion at BITE 2004 underscored Japanfs support
for Brunei Darussalamfs promotion of diversification into
other industries. The participation also helped to foster
even better mutual understanding and goodwill between Japan
and Brunei Darussalam.

2) Case for investing in Japan presented at IE Singapore
Forum 2004

JETRO Singapore presented its case for investing in Japan at
the inaugural International Enterprise Forum (IEF) 2004 that
took place at the Raffles City Convention Centre on January
15 2004. The theme for the forum, which was accompanied by
an exhibition, was "Beyond Singapore: New Markets,
Sustainable Growth".

Mr Sumihito Hirai, Managing Director of the JETRO
Singapore Representative Office, presented a paper entitled
A new, mature Japan - Why you cannot afford to ignore the
worldfs second largest economyh in the section on insights
into the Japan market.

In his presentation, Mr Hirai pointed out that Japanfs
Prime Minister, Mr Junichi Koizumi had pledged to double the
cumulative amount of foreign investment in Japan in five years.
He said the Japan Investment Council, chaired by the Prime
Minister, had announced a programme for promoting inward
investment, including addressing five key areas.

Also highlighted in his presentation was the fact that Japanfs
private sector was restructuring, corporate profits were up,
non-performing loans were being drastically reduced, consumer
confidence had returned, suggesting that the economic recovery
this time round was not only driven by export, but by domestic
demand as well.

IEF 2004 featured over 30 local and overseas speakers and
panelists and focused on two key areas: international growth
strategies and market insights. It was opened by Singaporefs Minister
for Trade and Industry, Mr George Yeo.

1) Japanese Business Sentiment in East Asia is Mixed

A monthly survey of Japanese companies and affiliates operating in
12 countries/regions of East Asia found that current business
sentiment in February is mixed, having leveled off or slightly
decreased in most locations since January. The outlook for the next
two to three months has also leveled off or slightly deteriorated,
according to the results of the survey conducted by JETRO, in
cooperation with Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry,
in the first week of February.

In the ASEAN region, the current outlook in Indonesia, Singapore
and Thailand has improved from the previous month, but has declined
in Malaysia and the Philippines. Indices in all locations
remain in positive territory. In China and North Asia, current
outlook has deteriorated in all locations except North China.
Forward indices, which show business sentiment regarding the next
two to three months going forward, have generally declined.
In the ASEAN region, forward indices have declined in all countries
except Malaysia, but are still positive in all countries.
