International Symposium
“Engaging East Asian Integration—States, Markets and Movement of People”

This December 9th, JETRO, together with the World Bank and the Asahi Shimbun, will hold an international symposium in Tokyo entitled, “Engaging East Asian Integration—States, Markets and Movement of People”. The symposium, which is open to the public (pre-registration is required), aims at discussing how Japan is—and should be—engaging in the processes of East Asian Integration, by examining the changing distribution of power and wealth in the region, ASEAN and ASEAN plus integration, issues of regional governance, and soft balancing of individual countries.

The symposium will also revisit the question of whether East Asian regional integration will lead to the formation of a Sino-centric regional order or if East Asian community-building is possible—given the differences in political regimes, economic development, religion and culture across the region.

Keynote speakers include Dr. Peter J. Katzenstein of Cornell University, Dr. Vikram Nehru of the World Bank and Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN Secretary-General. Other speakers for individual sessions include: Dr. Manolo Abella of the International Labor Organization, Dr. Jiro Okamoto of the Institute of Developing Economies, JETRO (IDE-JETRO), and Mr. Isamu Wakamatsu of JETRO. Following the presentations, speakers will engage in a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Takashi Shiraishi, President of IDE-JETRO.

The symposium will be held from 13:00-18:30 at the Hotel New Otani (4-1 Kioi-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo). Simultaneous Japanese-English interpretation and Japanese sign language service will be available. Admission is 4,000 yen (3,000 yen for students and JETRO & JETRO-IDE members). Application will close on November 28th (participation is limited to 500 persons.)

The event is also being held as part of celebrations for JETRO’s 50th anniversary.

The facility was established as part of the initiatives under the task force, for which JETRO serves as the Japan side coordinator.

The BSO’s primary function is to offer a full range of support and services to Japanese firms planning to enter local markets, as well as those seeking business and technology tie-ups with Saudi Arabian firms. JETRO Riyadh is supporting BSO’s management and services, including providing expert advice and consultation, and access to the JETRO Riyadh library. The new facility also has four temporary office spaces (which firms can use for up to two months).
